Antonia Modkova

She’s a patent lawyer, a computer scientist, an entrepreneur and a maths tutor. She speaks three languages. And Antonia Modkova credits her time at ACG Senior College for inspiring an ongoing love of knowledge and entrepreneurship that has shaped the very successful path that she has taken since school.

Antonia, who was Managing Director of Young Enterprise at the school in 2008, her final year, recently returned to her old stomping ground.

“It was really sentimental for me to be back there. It made me remember how great my three years there were,” she says.

But it wasn’t just a trip down memory lane – Antonia was meeting a class of ACG Senior College maths students to run a focus group on the maths tutoring app Osnova that she has developed with two partners.

The app uses artificial intelligence to tutor high school and university students in maths. It gives specific advice on a student’s answers, feedback on common mistakes, explanations for correct answers and suggestions on areas in which the student needs to practice.

Osnova is already starting to gain attention – Antonia and her partners recently got accepted into the Flux accelerator program, receiving significant funding and mentoring in advance of a wider investment round later this year which will see them pitch their idea to more than 200 investors.

“I really enjoyed studying Maths and Science and it frustrated me that other students couldn’t enjoy it,” Antonia explained. “I did a lot of private tutoring while I was studying and I realised that it wasn’t about inherent inability, because these students were more than capable. It was simply because of gaps in their knowledge from previous years. The app digitally replicates a private tutor by identifying these gaps and addressing them on the spot.”

Students have told the partners it’s the easiest maths study app they’ve used and one parent said recently that it had reinvigorated her daughter’s interest in maths.

“I have always loved Science and Maths – I believe they bring us closer to the truth of the world,” Antonia said. “So it’s very rewarding to be able to give that sense to others.”
