Sophie Macdonnell

Sophie Macdonnell is excited for what the future may hold.

The ACG Senior College graduate came Top in the World in Cambridge A-level Painting last year with a portfolio inspired by symbolism in art history.

“When I found out the result, I felt proud of how far I had come both with my painting and my confidence during my time at the school,” she said.

Artists from different eras – from baroque portraiture and early renaissance painters to contemporary realist and surrealist painters – informed Sophie’s painting portfolio.

Now, she’s motivated by another medium.

Inspired by the films of Jane Campion, Kelly Reichardt and David Lynch, among others, Sophie is undertaking a Film and Television Diploma at South Seas Film & Television School.

“What drew me to the idea of film-making was being able to learn new creative skills,” she said. “It struck me as the perfect medium to combine my love of visual arts with my love of storytelling.”

She credits her Art teacher at ACG Senior College, Andrew Strachan, for helping her on her journey.

“ACG Senior College is a relatively small school, everybody knows each other and there is an atmosphere of affinity between students and teachers. Mr Strachan guided and supported me and my fellow students, while also encouraging us to work independently and develop a strong work ethic as artists,” she explained.

While Sophie’s not sure yet what the future will hold, she knows it will be creative.

“What I enjoy most about painting and art in general is being able to express myself creatively and experiment with new techniques and styles. So it could be film-making, visual arts or something completely new!” she says.
